Defense Saves the day for Ohio State

No 2 Ohio State wins 21-10 over #5 Notre Dame in an early season battle of top 5 teams. Notre Dame started off fast hitting a 54-yard pass play on their first play of the game. An Ohio State personal foul penalty on that play added 15 more yards. This led to an eventual 33-yard field goal for the Fighting Irish and a 3-0 lead.

Ohio State final got on the board after a 31-yard C.J. Stroud pass to Emeka Egbuka for a touchdown with 5:32 to go in the first quarter. The 54-yard scoring drive took four plays and 1:34.

Notre Dame started the second quarter with a few nice passes, Buckner to Matt Salerno was a highlight catch, and a few short runs. This led to a 1-yard touchdown by Audric Estime with 11:56 to go until halftime. The score was 10-7 and remained the same until halftime.

In the third quarter both teams went back and forth on quick possessions. Ohio State started their eventual scoring drive on their 30-yard line after a Notre Dame punt. Stroud alluded defenders and completed a 16-yard pass to Egbuka. Then an 11-yard completion to Harrison. A few runs by Treveyon Henderson. Then Stroud hit Xavier Johnson for a 34-yard touchdown over the middle to take a 14-10 lead. This was a 10 play, 70-yard drive that took 4:43 to complete. This drive electrified the 106,594 who was in attendance.

The Ohio State defense took it from here shutting down the Notre Dame offense leading to five consecutive punts. Linebacker Tommy Eichenberg had 9 tackles and a pair of sacks. Ohio State’s final scoring drive started on their 5-yard line. The Buckeyes drove the ball 95 yards on 14 plays. It was Miyan Williams who punch in a 2-yard run to put the game away for the Buckeyes with 4:51 seconds to go.

The Buckeyes will face Arkansas State next Saturday at The Shoe.
