Boilermakers Defense too strong for Hoosiers

The Boilermakers led by Kayana Traylor’s team high 15 Points, beat their rival Hoosiers 56-53. The game was tight throughout the first half with the score at the half being 32-27 Indiana.

As the second half began Purdue went on an 8-0 run to take the lead. The lady Boilermakers tighten up their defense forcing the Hoosiers to commit 9 turnovers in the third quarter. Hoosier point guard Ali Patberg suffered this afternoon with a 1 for 12 shooting day and 4 turnovers.

After the quick second half start Purdue ended the third quarter hanging on to a 44-43 lead. By that time Traylor had scored 14 of her team high 15 points. The Hoosiers choose to pay their defensive attention on Oden and McLaughlin which left Traylor to have a nice game creating her chances on the offensive side.

Disappointed IU coach Teri Moren said, “We were going to give up something and Traylor is a young lady that I thought played well today, however, I will say this, she’s left handed. We know this, and we still let her go left. That is frustrating as a coach to watch when that’s part of the scouting report.”

With 25 seconds left Karissa MCLaughlin hit a basket to put the Boilermakers up for good and with 1.8 seconds left, made 2 free throws to give Purdue the 56 to 53 lead over the number 25 ranked Hoosiers. On the last play guard Bendu Yeaney passed the ball to Jaelynn Penn who mishandled the ball and time expired. Purdue wins 56-53.
