Fever shine bright in home opener

The Indiana Fever didn’t look back once the tip off of their home opener happened in their dominating victory over the New York Liberty 92-77. Kelsey Mitchell sank 5 three’s and had 23 points as she led the way for the Fever’s second win on the season and their second win over the Liberty.

In the first half, the Fever showed strong team play and moved the ball around to find smart shots. They showed patience as a team to get the easiest baskets possible. Defensively they played the Liberty tight, and jumped every passing lane that showed it could lead to a turnover. Liberty were making careless mistakes as well to help the fever end the half up 45-29, marking their largest halftime lead since 2016. Paris Kea really shined in the second quarter with 5 points, and 1 block with only 5 minutes of play.

Second half showed some defensive highlights from B. Laney who had a great steal that led to her breakaway basket at the other end of the court. Also, the Fever’s 1st round pick (3rd overall pick) McCowan effortlessly swatted away an attempt inside which got the Fever fans on their feet. Paris Kea continued to make the most of her time on the court in the second half as she finished the game with 10 points, 3 assists, 1 block and 1 steal. K. Mitchell who led the team in scoring finished the game with 23 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. T. Mitchell and E. Wheeler also scored in double digits.

Hopefully the Fever, who have struggled the last few seasons, can keep this confidence and momentum moving. Their next game is June 7th at 7pm in a home game against the Dallas Wings, who cut the NCAA women’s player of the year Megan Gustafson.
