Hoosier women get 13th win of the season

The IU Women held off a late rush by Penn State to get their 13th win of the season and end 2018 on a high note. The Hoosiers tough win against the Lady Lions was led by Ali Patberg who finished the game with 26 points. Hoosiers go into 2019 with a 13-1 record and top the women’s Big10 standings.

The Indiana Hoosiers Women came into tonight’s game with a 12-1 record and 1-0 in conference play, leading the big 10 standings. Penn State Lady Lions have fallen to the middle of the pack of the big 10 standings but are much tougher than their 7-5 record suggests.

The Hoosier Women started off sluggish and gave up a 7 to nothing lead before getting their first basket. After getting their wheels going, and settling down on the offensive end, they were able to make a stance in the 2nd quarter. With back to back steals leading to points and increased pressure on Penss state from the mid range they were able to tie the game again with a minute left in the half. They closed out the half with a pair of free throws and up 27 to 25.

The big difference in the first half was the foul situation. Hoosiers were 9-10 from the line while Penn State was 3-3. The Hoosier women went into the half shooting 26% from the field compared to Penn State’s 31%. Patberg’s 9 points led the Hoosier at the half.

After halftime the Hoosiers came out strong and working the ball inside that lead to 2 quick fouls. The Lady Lions fought back and increased the pressure inside to take the lead once again in the 3rd. Penn State’s foul troubles is what helped keep the Hoosiers in this game. A blocking foul with 5 seconds left in the quarter sent the Hoosiers Yeaney to the line to take the lead 56-55 and end the 3rd.  

Patberg started the 4th very strong by driving to the basket for a score then grabbing the board on a missed shot at the other end, helping bring the Hoosier’s lead to 5 points. A big three from Patberg midway in the 4th pushed the hoosiers to a 7 point lead at 71-64. This has really been her quarter with 25 points in the game with 4 min left to go. Penn State had turnover problems in the game but the Hoosiers being unable to find easy baskets kept them from really extending the lead. It also doesn’t help with 2 of the Lady Lions in foul trouble. But the Lady Lions wouldn’t lie down. They brought the lead down to 4 points with 48 seconds left in the game. At the end it just wasn’t enough for Penn State. The Hoosiers go on to win 83-75.
