The Fever fought hard but came up short on Thursday night losing 86-80. Brionna Jones scored a career high 34 points shooting 14-19 for the game. Jonquel Jones added 19 points for the game, leading a first quarter 20-4 run by scoring the last 8 points of that run. Connecticut hit 46 percent of its field goal attempts and made 23 of 26 free throws. The Fever could not recover this. The Sun now have a 12-5 record. This is their 4th victory in a row and they are a half game behind Las Vegas and Seattle for first place in the league.
For the Fever this is their 12th loss in a row. Kelsey Mitchell scored 21 points leading the way and fighting to the end with a nice steal and score in the closing seconds of the game. Tiffany Mitchell added 18 points of her own. Bernadett Hater made her first start in the WNBA replacing the injured Jessica Breland.
The Fever fell behind by 18 points at halftime. The second half was better as the Fever cut their turnovers from eleven in the first half down to only four in the second. Their defense improved as well in the third quarter. Kelsey Mitchell hit 2 free throws to cut the deficit down to 68-60 at the end of the third quarter but that was as close as the Fever could get. They shot 48.3 percent for the game and played better down the stretch.
The Fever and Sun will battle again on Saturday afternoon at 1 pm.
