The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team secured a 71–62 victory over the University of Illinois on Saturday night, advancing to the NCAA national championship game for the third time in four years.

UConn established control early in the Final Four matchup, building a 37–29 halftime lead behind disciplined offense and strong defensive pressure. The Huskies limited Illinois’ scoring opportunities in the first half, holding them to low shooting percentages from both the perimeter and inside.

Illinois responded in the second half with increased defensive intensity and a more aggressive approach to attacking the basket. A mid-half run narrowed the deficit to four points, but UConn regained momentum with a timely three-pointer from Braylon Mullins. The Huskies maintained their lead through efficient shot selection, solid rebounding, and consistent free-throw shooting in the closing minutes.

Tarris Reed Jr. led UConn with a double-double performance, contributing significantly in the paint on both ends of the floor. His rebounding and interior scoring helped the Huskies control the tempo and limit second-chance opportunities for Illinois.

Keaton Wagler paced Illinois with 20 points, keeping the team competitive throughout the contest. However, the Illini struggled from beyond the arc, converting just 6 of 26 three-point attempts.

UConn’s defensive execution played a key role in the outcome, as the team effectively contested shots and controlled the boards. Despite Illinois’ efforts to rally, the Huskies’ composure and physicality proved decisive.
