Ignite Stifle Fury’s Historic Blocking Effort in Four-Set Victory

Fishers, IND – The Indy Ignite continued their dominant run atop the Major League Volleyball standings on Thursday night, securing a hard-fought 3-1 victory over the Columbus Fury at the Fishers Event Center. Despite a record-tying defensive performance from the visitors, Indy’s offensive depth and late-set execution proved too much to handle. The Ignite took the match with set scores of 25-17, 25-18, 19-25, and 26-24, further solidifying their position as the league’s frontrunners.

Indy set the tone early in the opening frame, utilizing a 5-1 mid-set run to break open a tight contest. The Ignite offense clicked at a .275 clip, while their defensive pressure held Columbus to a meager .121 hitting percentage. Though Megan Lush provided a spark for the Fury with four early kills, the Ignite’s balanced attack ensured a comfortable 25-17 win to start the night.

The second set followed a similar script, though the Fury began to find their rhythm at the net. Columbus ramped up their front-row defense, but Indy’s poise under pressure remained the deciding factor. Trailing just 18-17, the Fury seemed poised to even the match before the Ignite uncorked a clinical 7-1 closing run. By the time the 25-18 set concluded, Indy appeared to be in total control of the momentum.

However, the third set belonged entirely to the Columbus defense. In a gritty display of resilience, the Fury tied a franchise record by finishing the night with 17 total blocks, seven of which came in the third frame alone. Led by Lush’s three blocks and three kills in the set, Columbus held Indy to a negative hitting percentage. A six-point scoring streak late in the set allowed the Fury to take it 25-19, successfully forcing a fourth set and silencing the Fishers crowd.

The final frame was a wire-to-wire thriller that saw both teams trading blows. Jaelyn Hodge provided a massive spark off the bench for Columbus, contributing four kills and eight digs in the set to keep the Fury within striking distance. Columbus nearly forced a decisive fifth set, pushing the score to a deuce, but the Ignite’s veteran composure shone through. Indy clinical execution in the final moments secured a 26-24 win to end the comeback threat.

With the win, the Ignite move to a league-best 14-2 record, while the Fury fall further into the basement at 3-13. While Columbus head coach Angel Perez praised his team’s “phenomenal” defensive effort, the night ultimately belonged to the Ignite’s ability to withstand the pressure. Indy now looks ahead to a road trip against the Grand Rapids Rise, while the Fury return home to host the Orlando Valkyries on March 24th.
