Michigan Secures First Big Ten Win Over Iowa at Crisler Center

Ann Arbor, Mich. — Under the bright lights of the Crisler Center, No. 10 Michigan delivered a composed performance Friday night, defeating No. 24 Iowa 196.775–195.600. It marked the Wolverines’ first Big Ten victory of the season.
Michigan set the tone immediately on vault, riding clean landings and confident amplitude to a 49.100 in the opening rotation. Sophomore Sophia Diaz anchored the lineup with authority, sticking a 9.900 to claim her first vault title of the season. That number would become a trend. By the end of the night, Diaz had authored a solid performance, piling up 9.900s on vault, uneven bars, and floor. An understated trifecta that quietly powered the Wolverines throughout the meet.
The Wolverines’ separation came in the middle rotations. On bars, Michigan looked unbothered by pressure, with Lily Clapper, Sophie Parenti, and Diaz sticking cold landings as if the meet were already decided. Iowa, however, refused to fold. After a shaky start, the Hawkeyes found their rhythm late, saving their best work for the floor. The floor rotation produced Iowa’s strongest event score, a 49.100.
Michigan improves to 3–1 overall and 1–1 in Big Ten action, while Iowa fell short after a resilient road effort. For the Wolverines, the win felt less like a peak and more like a checkpoint. With No. 21 Michigan State coming to Crisler Center on Feb. 1 in a nationally televised showdown starting at 3:45, Michigan appears to be settling into the kind of rhythm that turns January execution into March relevance.
