Wolverines start season against Pride

The Battle Ground Football League (BGFL) founded in 2016 is in its fourth season as a league, what is the BGFL you ask? It is a cost friendly limited travel league that has teams based in Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Kentucky.

The semi-pro football league currently has eleven teams based in those four states, teams consist of players of all age range from former high school players and college players as well. The season is shortened due to the Covid-19 Pandemic but that has not stopped these players from playing the game they love.

This last Saturday was week 1 of the season and the battle of Allen County between the Allen County Pride Lions and the newest team in the league Fort Wayne Wolverines.

The intensity would start from the opening kickoff, as both teams had to shake off the off season rust they would each go three and out respectively through most of the first half, defense would be the key for both sides as the wolverines would be in the backfield multiple times, the Wolverines defense lead by #23 Keyontae Green would have 10 Tackles, 8 of those were sacks.

The scoring was scarce until less than a minute left QB Terry Gardner would connect in with RJ Moss on a slant, to make it 6-0 they would try the two-point conversion but would be stuffed in the backfield.

The second half would see the Wolverines dominate the Prides offense once again showing them that just because they were the new team in the league they came to play.

The second half the Wolverine offense would continue to run away from the Lions defense as they would score again this time Devon Stone would who had 75 yards in punt returns.

The Wolverine defense would again prove to be way too much for the Pride and would score for the third time when D’Andre Smith would pick the pass off and return it for 6 points to make the score 18-0.

That would be all the Wolverines would need to secure the week one win and the shutout, and to take the 2020 battle of Allen County.

The wolverines (1-0) will take on the Indiana Cutters (0-1) who loss a close game to the Calvary last week in week 1. The Wolverines look to continue their winning ways but will have to improve on many aspects of the game, now that week one jitters are behind them week two will really show if they are a legit contender as a new team with a lot of talent on the roster.
